How to write a strong CV as a nurse

Concrete, no clichés — what works with recruiters.

NMC pin + specialism first

For NHS trusts and private hospitals three things are immediately decisive: your NMC registration (state "NMC pin" or "NMC-registered" explicitly), your specialism and which ward/setting you have worked in. Put that information on the first line of your profile. For each employer, specify the ward and patient population — a generic "nurse at hospital X" says nothing, "ICU nurse, cardiothoracic ward at X" is instantly clear.

Continuity and certifications weigh heavily

NHS trusts highly value longer tenure — make good employer-tenure visible. Mention post-registration courses, mentorship qualifications and continuing professional development (BLS, ACLS, ALS, EPALS, NLS) in a dedicated certifications section or integrate them with education. EPR experience (Cerner, Epic, SystmOne, EMIS) is a real filter for many trusts — list it under skills.

Practice supervision and quality work as a plus

Practice supervision of student nurses, sitting on quality committees, protocol development — these are all strong signals for ward managers looking for senior nurses. Mention them concretely ("5 nursing students years 2-3 in the past 2 years"), not vaguely ("experience with mentoring").
