How to write a strong CV as a accountant

Concrete, no clichés — what works with recruiters.

Qualification, niche and seniority first

Big 4 and mid-tier firms screen for three filters: ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualification (or in-progress), sector specialism (Financial Services, Retail, Public Sector), and your management track. Put that information explicitly on line 1 of your profile. Anyone writing audit manager without sector-specific work history immediately raises doubt.

Numbers and names are fine — discretion lives within NDAs

Auditors are often cautious with client names because of confidentiality obligations — rightly so. But revenue ranges and sector context ("Tesco supplier", "FTSE-listed insurer") are usually permitted and powerful. Also include final-exam achievements (CFO presentations, IFRS transitions delivered, clean audit opinions) where they measurably contributed.

Promotion track and coaching impact

At manager level and above, your ability to pull people up is as important as technical quality. "Coached 3 senior associates through final ACA exams; all 3 passed at first attempt" is a strong signal of the professional quality partners want to see.
