How to write a strong CV as a consultant

Concrete, no clichés — what works with recruiters.

MBB CV: the "Little Black Dress" format

At MBB (McKinsey, BCG, Bain) and tier-1 strategy firms the format is stricter than elsewhere: one page, black-and-white, conservative typography, no colour, no photo. The Zakelijk or Executive template in ResuBox aligns with this. Numbers and names wherever possible — McKinsey reads a case bullet without a number as unproven.

Cases with deal value, scope and impact

Describe cases along three dimensions: scope (deal value, FTE impact, geographic coverage), your role (analyst / associate / EM), and concrete impact ("£78M implemented"). NDA issues: sector and deal size are usually permissible without a client name — if in doubt, anonymise ("European insurer") and stay concrete with numbers.

MBA, GMAT, languages — yes or no

For strategy consulting, education carries weight. Top MBA programmes (Stanford, INSEAD, LBS, IESE, Harvard) always mention — strong filter. GMAT score only if above 720. First-class honours / honours tracks always state. Languages at C-level or native (EN/FR/DE/ES) are often a real plus for international engagements — list them.
